Hi. I’m Jason Fagone, a reporter and author. This is a newsletter about my writing projects, particularly my latest book, The Woman Who Smashed Codes. It’s the story of an American woman who solved the sorts of puzzles that helped America win the world wars. Her name was Elizebeth Smith Friedman, and she lived a life of incredible adventure, transforming herself from a Quaker poet and schoolteacher into one of the greatest codebreakers of her time, using a pencil and paper to hunt gangsters during Prohibition and Nazi spies during World War II.
